A Quarter Million New Students

Approximately 250,000 new students are beginning their academic journey at universities and higher education institutions this term.  IG Metall is committed to being a reliable partner and advocate for these students.

At semester welcome-events, such as campus barbecues, we are present and have a dialogue about how and why the IG Metall can be a strong ally for students.

Connecting Through the Local Youth Committee (OJA)

For those who are new in a region and seek for social events or want to get politically involved, the “Ortsjugendausschuss” (or short OJA which translates to Local Youth Committee) offers the opportunity to connect with other students, apprentices and young colleagues.

Support for Working Students

More than two thirds of all students are working on the side to finance their studies. Whether you do an internship, vacation job, mini job or get “BAföG” – if things get complicated, you can go to your local IG Metall branch for advice on your rights.
Our legal advice is also available at the campus to support you during exams. Every member of IG Metall gets free legal advice on everything concerning exams or if an exmatriculation is looming.
The ISIC Card - the International Student Identity Card - is the globally accepted proof of student, trainee, and apprentice status. As our member, you get it for free: www.igmetall.de/jugend/auszubildende/vorteile-fuer-auszubildende/isic (german only).

Improved Financial Support for Students

By the way: Since this winter semester, students receiving government aid under BAföG have seen several increases:

  • Basic support rates increased by 5% to 475 Euros
  • The housing allowance for students living independently rose to 380 Euros
  • The maximum total subsidy has increased to 992 Euros
  • Freshmen under 25 from economically disadvantaged backgrounds are now eligible for a 1,000 Euros start-up grant

IG Metall stands ready to support students through these new opportunities and challenges - offering a trusted network and strong advocacy every step of the way.
